John Saul is a thriller writer that was born on the 25th February 1942. He lives in the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii. After going to several colleges John decided to drop out and become a writer. This was a long and challenging process. He spent 15 years in numerous jobs honing his skills as a writer and sending around manuscripts with nothing but rejections in return. Finally one day in 1976 he sent a manuscript to the publishing company Dell. They asked him if he would be interested in writing a psychological thriller instead. Thus began his career as a thriller writer.

Even though he likes writing psychological thrillers, John doesn’t like to watch horror movies.
John’s first published thriller Suffer the Children was one of the first paperback originals to be marketed on television.
Some of John’s favourite characters to write are children. He believes they have a lot to offer a writer because of their innocence. A child can kill people and still maintain sympathy with the reader.
John Saul would have preferred a career in writing comedy instead of thrillers.
John’s routine is to try and write a scene each day. He doesn’t believe in having a muse and waiting for inspiration. He has discovered he can write just about anywhere as well.
His novel Cry for Strangers was made into a film.
He would get is agent to receive all the rejection letters to avoid unnecessary agony on his part.
John enjoys the beach and cooking seafood.
His advice to aspiring writers is not to take writing classes and not to let friends or family critique your work. He believes to get your work published and meet agents and editors, it is good to attend writer’s conferences.
